Natural Resource Awareness Days

Held each September, Natural Resources Awareness Days, formerly Coal Appreciation Days, originated in 1984 as a joint effort to salute the coal industry and show appreciation for its contribution to Wise County. In 2001, the Chamber’s NRAD Committee  dramatically changed and expanded the program to include activities and speakers relating to all our natural resources including mined minerals, water, gas, oil, and timber. The name of the event was changed to Natural Resources Awareness Days. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of all Wise County’s natural resources. Students view displays and participate in discussions about Wise County’s natural resources  as they relate to science topics incorporated in the Virginia Standards of Learning.
