Mountain Empire
Dialysis Center

Mountain Empire Dialysis Center of Norton has a highly trained staff experienced to assist with all dialysis needs. Some of the services available are: in center hemodialysis; home hemodialysis; transplant referrals; and transient treatments. The unit has support staff that includes a dietician and social worker who will work closely with the nursing staff and nephrologist to provide a team approach to patient care.
 

Wise County
Health Department

The Wise County Health Department, a $1.5 million facility located at 134 Roberts Street, SW, in Wise, offers county residents public health services. Some services are free. Charges for others are based on income levels. All services are confidential.

Hospitals

The citizens of Wise County and the City of Norton are served by three modern, conveniently located hospitals: Mountain View Regional Medical Center, a Member of Wellmont Health System and Norton Community Hospital & Mountain State Health Alliance in Norton and Lonesome Pine Hospital, a Member of Wellmont Health System in Big Stone Gap.

Mountain View Regional Medical Center

Mountain View Regional Medical CenterMountain View Regional Medical Center  (Mountain View), formerly St. Mary’s Hospital, has served Norton, Virginia and the surrounding region since 1948. The 133-bed, facility joined Wellmont Health System in 2007. This merger has resulted in improved and seamless access to a broader array of physicians and healthcare services for the people of Wise County and the surrounding area, while maintaining compassionate, quality health care.

Mountain View continues to advance in medicine and make strides in technology. The facility provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including 24-hour emergency services, inpatient medical and surgical services, intensive care, outpatient surgical services and long-term care.

Ancillary services offered at Mountain View assist with diagnosis and treatment for patients. Comprehensive laboratory services to care for the medical needs of the community are available in the hospital’s Joint Commission accredited laboratory, which operates under the supervision of a board-certified pathologist. The radiology department offers 24-hour access to diagnostic imaging and includes a recently installed state-of-the-art 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner. Other diagnostic services include ultrasound, accredited mammography services, mobile MRI, bone density, nuclear medicine and position emission topography scanner (PET). Physical rehabilitation services are available and include physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation. The cardiopulmonary department offers both inpatient and outpatient services including sleep studies to assist patients with sleep disorders.

Mountain View has a dual-certified 44-bed skilled/intermediate long term care unit located within the hospital. The unit is accredited by The Joint Commission. Patients are provided quality, customer friendly care to those in need of short and long stays.

The medical staff of Mountain View consists of over 50 physicians with specialty training in cardiology, dentistry, emergency medicine, family practice, gastroenterology, general medicine, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychology, pulmonary medicine, radiology, surgery, and urology.

Norton Community Hospital

Located in Southwest Virginia in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Norton Community Hospital (NCH) is a 129-bed, acute-care, not-for-profit facility serving Southwest Virginia and Southeastern Kentucky. To improve access to primary care, the hospital also operates four clinics, Community Physicians-Norton, Community Physicians-Coeburn, Community Clinic-Wise, and OccuMed Health Center.  The largest facility in the coalfield region, NCH provides a wide array of services through highly trained physicians and support staff.  Norton Community Hospital is a partner of Mountain States Health Alliance, a regional healthcare system headquartered in Johnson City, TN which consists of 14 hospitals in Eastern TN and Southwest VA.  The hospital is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association.

NCH’s medical staff consists of over 80 physicians and surgeons with specialty training in: family practice, internal medicine, ear-nose-throat, general surgery, urology, pediatrics, emergency medicine, geriatric medicine, critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, radiology, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynecology and dentistry.

Programs and services include intensive care/critical care/coronary care, 24-hour emergency room services, pediatric care, laser surgery, outpatient surgery, lithotripsy services, home health, dietary/nutrition support, pharmacy, and pain management.  Their radiological services include angiography, mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, in-house magnetic resonance imaging unit (MRI), and CT scanner.  Families no longer have to follow a path to several rooms when giving birth.  The Family Birthing Center has seven (7) LDRP suites that offer comfort, care, and compassion unparalleled in the region.  The Regional Lung Center offers pulmonary care, cardiac care, neurology, and sleep medicine.  The Regional Rehab Center offers occupational therapy, physical therapy, pulmonary rehab, speech therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, an 11-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, and a community wellness program. 

NCH has enabled businesses to lower their medical care cost through a comprehensive occupational medicine program at OccuMed Health Center.  OccuMed offers nursing case management, work-related injury treatment and follow-up, physicals, drug screenings, vaccinations, work-site safety analysis, general health screenings, OSHA regulation compliance assistance, and industrial rehabilitation. Community Home Care offers durable medical equipment such as lift chairs, motorized scooters, limb braces, diabetic supplies, turbans, and a private fitting room for mastectomy fittings.

The Wanda Wampler Center for Women’s Health houses comprehensive women’s health services.  The center offers Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Bone Densitometry, and Mammography. 

NCH is an AOA accredited teaching facility, serving as a training hub-site for 3rd year medical students through final year resident participants from Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.  The Community Clinic located in the Wise Professional Office Building in Wise, VA is operated by the residents training at Norton Community Hospital.

Lonesome Pine Hospital

Wellmont Lonesome Pine HospitalLonesome Pine Hospital, located in Big Stone Gap, VA, has been a member of Wellmont Health System since 2007.  The community hospital, which has been recognized as one of the nation’s Top 100 hospitals for performance improvement, provides a full spectrum of health care services.  The hospital continues to grow to better serve the healthcare needs of the community.  Lonesome Pine Hospital is a founding member of the Regional Stroke Network, a collaborative effort between several rural hospitals in Southwest Virginia to better care for patients suffering from a stroke.

The hospital is currently undergoing a $5 million expansion and improvement project that will allow the facility to take their level of service higher.  This project will increase the number of emergency department exam rooms to 21, replace semi-private emergency department exam rooms with private rooms, add new space for a same-day surgery center, PACU/recovery area and two endoscopy suites, install a new magnetic resonance imaging machine and renovate support areas, and install new windows throughout the entire facility designed to save energy and enhance patient privacy and comfort.

Digital mammography recently became operational at Lonesome Pine. The new equipment will assist in early detection of breast cancer. With digital mammography, the image of the breast is captured electronically and viewed on a computer screen, rather than being recorded on film like a traditional mammogram.

The hospital provides family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, gastroenterology, pulmonology oncology, neurology and a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, including radiology, laboratory, blood bank, ophthalmology, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and cancer care at the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center. Lonesome Pine continually recruits top physicians to best serve its patients.  

Nursing Homes

Heritage Hall, located at 9434 Coeburn Mountain Road in Wise, is a 97-bed nursing facility with a staff of 100. Heritage Hall of Big Stone Gap is located at 2045 Valley View Drive and has 180 beds and a staff of 170.

Heritage Hall provides excellent medical and nursing services with loving care. Their nursing department consists of dedicated professionals with a combination of strong clinical skills and years of experience. Heritage Hall is devoted to caring for both short-term rehabilitation patients and long-term care nursing patients.

Heritage Hall offers their patients individualized pharmacy services, skilled nursing, and in-house therapy. Physical, occupational, and speech therapies are also offered for those individuals who need rehabilitative services. Furthermore, their staff is always available for support, counseling, and encouragement for patients and their families.

 

Hospice

Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia, established in 1993, is a community-based, non-profit organization which provides pain and symptom management, comfort measures, and quality of life care to the terminally ill and their families in nine counties of Southwest Virginia, including the cities of Norton and Bristol.

Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia is Virginia licensed and Medicaid and Medicare certified. Staffed by physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers, compassionate care is available 24 hours a day. Bereavement counseling is provided to surviving family members for up to one year following the death of their loved one.

Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia is located at 738 Park Avenue, Suite 3, in Norton.

 

Cancer Center

The Southwest Virginia Regional Cancer Center, which opened in April 1995, offers comprehensive out-patient cancer treatment to patients who have been diagnosed and referred to the facility by their physicians.  The center provides a team approach to cancer therapy and provides chemotherapy, radiation therapy, continuing medical education for local physicians, and access to new therapies being researched at major cancer centers.  The cancer center offers free cervical, prostate, and skin cancer screenings to the community throughout the year.

cated in the newly opened state-of-the-art facility at 671 Hwy 58 E., in Norton, is a department of Wellmont Physician Services in Kingsport, TN.  Radiation Oncology is currently located at 611 Trent Street, NE, in Norton, but will soon join Medical Oncology in the new facility.  They are a department of Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap. 

 

Home Health Agencies

By providing in-home care for individuals, home health agencies enable the patient to be in familiar, comfortable surroundings and have the companionship of family and friends. There are several home health agencies serving Wise County and the City of Norton including the following Wise County Chamber of Commerce members: Amedisys Home Health Care; Mountain View Regional Medical Center's Home Care; First Choice Home Health Care; Patient First Home Care; Friendship Home Health, Inc.; In Home Care, Inc.; Independent Home Health Care; Norton Community Home Health; and Wellmont Home Care.

Services provided are skilled nursing care, personal care aids, physical therapy, speech therapy, and case management through a social worker. All providers have 24-hour emergency services.

 

Other Services

Ambulance services, health clinics, wellness centers, and mental health facilities are also located throughout the county. In addition, the area is served by many fine medical professionals including: audiologist, chiropractors, dentists, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthodontists, pediatricians, pharmacists, physical therapists, physicians, and more.
